External door fillings – cores

External door fillings – cores. Currently, the most commonly produced on the market are external doors made of HPL, aluminum, PVC, steel or wooden with a filling of various types of cores.

What are the types of core of door panels?

XPS panels (the material we recommend) are made of expanded polystyrene, thanks to which they have very good parameters in terms of thermal insulation. It is one of the most popular materials with a closed-cell structure and is an excellent insulation material, resistant to moisture and frost. The XPS core is characterized by high stiffness and compressive strength, which is why it is perfect for the joinery industry.

Polyurethane foam – (PUR). It is a more expensive material, but it provides very good insulation. Filling the door with polyurethane foam is so effective because the closed-cell structure of the PUR core allows to maintain thermal, fire and mechanical stability in all environmental conditions for years of operation. PUR foam is resistant to weather conditions (rain, snow, wind) and its other advantage is the anti-moisture effect. The core has very good thermal properties and is resistant to mold and other fungi throughout its service life.

Styrofoam (polystyrene) is a classic insulating material. It is cheap, easy and quick to produce. It insulates decently, but loses in terms of parameters with most modern solutions.

Mineral wool is now also used less and less, due to the greater availability of more modern materials. It is quite cheap and provides very good fire protection parameters, but it significantly increases the weight of the door leaf. The thermal parameters of the wool-filled door are good.

Technical requirements – external doors

External doors should provide warmth, durability, tightness and soundproofing. Modern doors have a multi-layer structure so that inside the door leaf, and often also in the casing and in the frame, and even in the threshold, there is a thermal insulation material. A thick door leaf can accommodate a lot of xps foam, pur foam, mineral wool or polystyrene. That is why good entrance doors are massive. The heat transfer coefficient U should be no more than 1.3 W / (m2.K). The water resistance class of the external door is at least 3-4. The door should have at least two seals around its perimeter. Thick doors filled with thermal insulation material will also provide adequate soundproofing – they will effectively dampen noises coming from the outside. Their sound reduction index RA is usually at least 30 dB. External door fillings – cores
